Google
Spam Filters - are you next?
Google Spam Filters
Google operates a number of spam filters within its algorithm in
an effort to remove bad quality websites.
Let's take a look at three of Google's spam filters that relate
to links and linking.
Linking is an excellent method of increasing page rank but there
is a professional way of link building. It isn't a task that you
should farm out unless the person or persons you have entrusted
are fully capable and have a thorough understanding of the implications
if they do not do the job right.
If your website is aught by these filters, you will be penalised
and it will be a very long, slow and painful process trying to reinstate
your website position.
Link Farm Filter.
A link farm is a site that exists simply to host links, there is
no other purpose for its existence other than trying to manipulate
search engines. We have all received an email
"I have
just visited your excellent website and would appreciate a link
"
The truth is, a link farm will cause damage. To avoid being penalised,
stay clear!
Too many links, too fast.
On the same level is building too many links, too fast. If you were
to physically locate websites that were totally relevant to yours
and wrote a personal email to the Webmaster requesting a link exchange.
Your response rate might be 0.5%, less than half a percent. It is
highly likely that this will trigger Google's spam filter. Too many
links, too fast will trigger Google's spam filter and down the ranks
you go!
The Broken Link Filter.
To avoid getting caught out here, incest time in checking your site
for broken links
check each one. If you find a broken link,
either internally or externally, fix it or remove it.
The above three filters
relate to linking, this section focuses on how your site is established
with Google, its maturity and age.
Peter Yexley, an internet marketing pioneer came up with a theory
that we should view websites in 'dog years', that is one human year
equals seven dog years, thus if you created your site one year ago,
the speed that the internet evolves would render your website seven
year old!
Not many website get old, some fall out of the search engines' favour
because they are neglected, others are purposely neglected because
the Webmaster never really made any money (through lack of professional
website promotion).
Sandbox Filter
With this in mind Google, in order to maintain up to date indexing
has a filter called 'The Sandbox'. In the UK we call it a sandpit.
Google is the head of the nursery, and your website is the new kid
in the nursery, Google will place your website in the sandpit to
see how well you behave.
When you can prove that you will live within the rules, you are
considered for release from the 'Sandbox'.
TrustLink Filter
Google's TrustRank filter works in a similar way the sandbox filter.
Let's assume you have gained Google's trust and you are out of the
sanspit. The next thing is to earn a level of TrustRank. Web sites
with a high TrustRank will get high rankings on Google. The question
you might have is; How do I get a high TrustRank?. The TrustRank
of a web site is simply determined by the maturity of your web site,
as well as the quality of relevant inbound links and of course the
contents of your web site.
Domain Age Filter
If you have just registered a new domain, the Domain Age Filter
will view your site differently that if you have an older domain.
Web sites with old domain names are more likely to get high rankings
for competitive keywords on Google.
