How Co-Citation effects your
website search engine rankings.
Co Citation is an area
is vastly overlooked or not known by many webmasters.
Whilst you take great
care and attention finding perfect linking partners, the web sites
that those partners link can influence your rank in major search
engines. This third party linking is called co-citation and you
may have little or no control.
How does co-citation work?:
Let's say websites 1, 2, 3 and 4 all link to the web sites A, B,
C and D.
Now A, B, C and D don't actually link to each other, but the search
engines think that they are related because the same web sites link
to them. If they are all linked from 1, 2, 3 and 4 may be related
to each other, even though they don't directly link to each other.
If A, B, C and D do link to many other websites; they clearly have
a strong relationship to each other and the more websites that are
linked, the stronger the linking relationship.
If your own website is say, A, you should make sure that web sites
B, C and D are also related to by links your site.
This rule doesn't always apply and relationships should be relative,
relevant and appropriate
When search engines conduct a back-link check it might find that
your site isn't link appropriately.
It isn't that complicated, lets say that your own website sells
ironmongery. If you are listed on a page that links to kinky online
dating sites and adult type potions sites among other similar types,
the search engines might quite rightly think that your website is
related the 'adult' industry. The result could mean that it might
be difficult to get high rankings for search terms that are about
ironmongery.
So, the major consideration here is to ensure that the other links
on the web page that your website is linked are related to your
business. If you are listed in the "Ironmongery" category
of a portal or directory then all links on that page should also
relate to ironmongery.
When you accept link exchange offers make sure that the link to
your website is on a page that lists related links only. Don't worry
if the entire site doesn't relate
the actual page where your
link sits is the important issue. yours.
